STAR-Ghana invited applications from registered Ghanaian Civil Society Organisations, Media Organisations and Private Sector Associations for the Local Governance call. The overall objective of the call is to: Strengthen, scale up and consolidate the results of previous and on-going local governance focused initiatives particularly in the areas of inclusive voice, improved access and transparency in service delivery in Ghana. This was open to CSOs, media organisations, private sector associations and academia operating at the community, district, regional or national levels.
The project periods would range from a minimum of 12 months to a maximum of 24 months and comprises two components:
- Strategic Policy Grants component: This component will support national level CSOs with capacity to do strategic level policy influencing to implement projects aimed at addressing systemic constraints around local governance and decentralization issues at the policy levels. This project will have a maximum duration of 24 months and grant fund support not exceeding GHC 600,000.00.
- District Level Grants component: The District Level Small Grants component will support local actions at the district and local levels, enabling citizens address locally salient service delivery issues. It will particularly focus on processes of social inclusion and vulnerable groups’ interaction with the local governance mechanism. Projects shall have a maximum duration of 12 months and grant fund support not exceeding GHC 250,000.

This grant call is currently closed, and applications were assessed by independent assessors with expertise in local governance. Total number of applications received by the stipulated deadline for submission were one hundred and one (101). Out of the hundred and one (101) applications received, sixty – nine (69) were under the Local Partnerships Component/District Level Grants Component and thirty-two (32) under the Strategic Partnerships Component/Strategic Policy Grants Component.
Due diligence and shortlisting of applications by the independent assessors was conducted from 25th April – 8th May 2018. In all 26 applicants were shortlisted under the Call (7 Strategic policy Grant Partners and 19 local partnership Grant Partners). Based on the review of the assessors’ reports, 23 out of the 26 applicants have been recommended for programme funding and support.
