REFLECTIONS ON THE STAR-GHANA LEARNING EVENT ELECTIONS 2016

GENERAL REFLECTION

The event was very well organized and everything needed for the success of the program was arranged well. The learning event afforded STAR-Ghana and GPs the opportunity to learn, share and also build partnerships between and among various organizations.

The facilitation and participation was very good, contributing to the success of the whole programme.

Generally the event was very well organized and managed, with a lot of lessons to take on board.

i. Facilitation was great

ii. Space created for beneficiaries to share good practices

iii. Opportunities created for building partnerships, collaborations and synergies between and among grant partners and government agencies.

What was striking for you giving second time engagement with STAR-Ghana and its Partners?

1. The need for constitutional amendment to the appointments into the top hierarchy of various forces. Most especially appointment of IGP and the Head of the Military. Perhaps one of the ways we can deal with the menace of political vigilante groups.

2. The fact that having a successfully elections does not mean good governance therefore the need to work towards obtaining good governance as the ultimate.

3. Funding of election related activities in future.

4. The space created to interact with the state institutions involved in Ghana’s electoral processes and the various presentations made.

5. The event further enriched the review process and it will further improve the final report.

6. Critical discussions around elections could improve future elections.

7. Presentation of communiqué to the press/media could kick start debate on the issue.

What did you learn?

1. I have learnt that elections are just a gate to democracy and good governance.

2. CSOs should begin to think of funding of election related events beyond STAR-Ghana.

3. STAR-Ghana in the process of starting a discussion on formation of National body so that they can raise funds internally to support other organizations.

How do you think civil society can engage better with the political parties and stakeholders particularly around elections?

1. The story of GPs shared on the project through a review report conducted.

2. Getting the top executives of the major political parties into forum like this could help.

3. Getting state men of integrity with vast experience in the related area could help. E.g. invitation of Dr. Afari Gyan.

4. Bringing together the beneficiaries could be a good strategy.

What are your recommendations going forward?

1. The market place exhibition bit was not well coordinated and many stands were not visited.

Recommendation

My recommendation is that next time that aspect could be left out and to be replaced by a kind of presentation of success stories. The review report presented by Mary Tobin was great.

2. Account from beneficiaries was a good initiative which could have brought more light to the project. However only a few got the chance to share their experience.

Recommendation

The amendment of the original plan to a kind of video recording of beneficiary account was very good. However, this could be done early just like the review so that it could be played during the event. This could replace with the World café.

3. Accommodation arrangement was a challenge to some participants. This is because participants were separated into different locations and some had better services than others. This also made transportation very difficult.

Recommendation

In arranging for accommodation with a hotel for such events, let us ensure that participants are allocated rooms by having their names attached to rooms or room numbers. With this, organizers will be able to know whether a particular hotel can host us or not.

4. Inclusion of communiqué to the learning event was very great as well.

Recommendation

My recommendation is that the communiqué should be presented to the various stakeholders especially the EC.

Again, communiqué should be presented to the media in the presence of all participants.

CALID

5. The inactions with the state actors and other major presentations to the learning event brought more light to the event. However, questions and answers were very much limited.

Recommendation

A little bit of time should be given to participants to clarify issues that boarder them.

With Thanks to our Funders
